Passage to the Past
Being transformed from the last place Jewish artists could perform, to a deportation center during the Holocaust (also known as Umschlagplatz), the Hollandsche Schouwburg embodies an important memorial site to the Dutch victims of the Holocaust. As a special collaboration between Kuba Jekiel and Studio VRij, this project aims to transport audiences back in time through the mixed and virtual reality visualisation of the past.
By using MR technology, audiences can experience the past and present simultaneously. They can interact with important figures and personal items in the virtual space, and learn about personal stories and memories as a form of reflection on the life-changing event of the Holocaust. The virtual reality visualisation of the past will feature a stylised aesthetic, making history more accessible to younger generations while honouring the serious nature of the Holocaust.
The aim of this project is to encourage younger generations to engage with historical and cultural events, as well as to promote a deeper understanding of and connection to the Second World War, with a specific focus on the Holocaust.
The first prototype was showcased in September 2023 at the Joods Museum (Jewish Museum) in Amsterdam.
